ABSTRACT

Background: Aim of the study was to evaluate the primary procedural success of Multivessel Percutaneous coronary intervention in patients with acute ST-segment elevated myocardial infarction at the same sitting. Methods: Total 23 (13.4%) patients were enrolled in this very preliminary study, among the total 171 patients who had primary PCI at our center from Jan 2010 to February 2015. Among them, Male: 20 and Female: 3. Total 52 stents were deployed in 46 territories. Mean age were for both male and female were 54 yrs. Associated coronary artery disease risk factors were Dyslipidemia, High Blood pressure, Diabetes Mellitus, positive family history for coronary artery disease and Smoking. Results: Among the study group; 17(74%) were Dyslipidemic, 11(47.8%) were hypertensive; 8(34.8%) patients were Diabetic, positive family history 4(17.4%) and 9(39%) were all male smoker. Female patients were more obese (BMI: M 26: F 27). Common diagnosis at admission based on ECG evidence was; Inferior wall myocardial infarction: 12 (52.2%), Anterior wall myocardial infarction 9(39.1%) and lateral 2(8.7%). Common stented territory was left anterior descending artery 9(39.1%), right coronary artery 7(30.4%), and left circumflex artery 7(30.4%). Stent used: Bare metal stent 3 (5.7%), DES: 49 (94.2%). Among the different drug eluting stents, Everolimus 26 (52%), Sirolimus 8(15.4%) and Zotarolimus 9(17.3%), Paclitaxel 2 (3.8%), Biolimus 2 (3.8%), Genous 2 (3.8%). Conclusion: In the current prospective non randomized study, we found that the multivessel primary PCI for ST elevation myocardial infarction with non-culprit vessel are suitable for PCI at the same sitting with better in-hospital and 1 yr survival outcome.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the antioxidant, antimicrobial, cytotoxic and thrombolytic property of the fruits and leaves of Spondias dulcis (S. dulcis). Methods:Methanolic extracts of fruits and leaves of S. dulcis were partitioned with chloroform and dichloromethane. The antioxidant potential of the crude extract and partitioned fractions were evaluated in terms of total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, DPPH radical scavenging potential, reducing potential and total antioxidant capacity by specific standard procedures. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated using disc diffusion method. The cytotoxicity was evaluated by using brine shrimp lethality bioassay and compared with vincristine sulfate. The thrombolytic activity was compared with streptokinase. Results:The methanolic fruit extract exhibited the highest phenolic content, flavonoid content and antioxidant capacity, among the other extracts, with the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity at a concentration of 10 μg/mL (IC50: 1.91 μg/mL) and maximum reducing power at a concentration of 100 μg/mL (EC50: 3.58 μg/mL). Though all extract showed moderate antimicrobial activity against the bacterial strains, weak or no activity against fungus. The range of LC50 value of all extracts was 1.335-14.057 μg/mL which was far lower than the cut off index for cytotoxicity. All extracts exhibited statistically significant (P Conclusions:Our study suggested that S. dulcis exhibits antimicrobial activities against a wide variety of strains while it possesses significant antioxidant, cytotoxic and thrombolytic activity.

ABSTRACT

Despite the national vitamin A and antihelminthic prophylaxis programmes, both intestinal geohelminths and subclinical vitamin A deficiency continue to be prevalent among children in developing countries. Studies on potential synergistic effects of vitamin A supplementation and deworming on retinol status have inconsistent results. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the impacts of low-dose β-carotene supplementation and antihelminthic therapy on serum retinol and β-carotene concentrations in preschool children of Bangladesh. Two hundred and forty-four children, known to be infected with Ascaris lumbricoides, were randomized into four treatment groups: I-IV. Group I and II received two oral doses of 400 mg of albendazole each, the first dose at baseline and the second dose after four months; Group III and IV received placebo in place of albendazole. In addition, Group I and III received 1.2 mg of β-carotene powder in capsule daily for six months, and Group II and IV received placebo in place of β-carotene. Serum retinol and β-carotene levels were measured before and after six months of the interventions. Serum retinol and β-carotene increased significantly in Group I where both antihelminthic therapy and daily β-carotene supplementation were given (p<0.05 and p<0.001 respectively). Antihelminthic therapy alone only improved serum β-carotene concentration (p<0.0001). Low-dose β-carotene supplementation, along with an antihelminthic therapy, synergistically improved vitamin A status. This finding has public-health implications for improving vitamin A status of children in developing countries.
